Course overview

Geological mapping has changed more in the last decade than in the fifty years before it. The compass and field notebook still matter, but they now sit alongside centimeter-accurate positioning, drone photography that rebuilds a cliff in three dimensions, and satellite imagery that flags mineralogy across a whole license area. This course helps geologists make sense of that toolkit and use it well.

Throughout, the aim is to keep the geology in charge of the technology. A dense point cloud is not a map, and a slick 3D model can hide a weak interpretation. Participants look at how modern survey data is captured, cleaned, and turned into products that stand up to scrutiny, and how traditional mapping discipline keeps the whole workflow honest.

Where this fits in modern survey workflows

Exploration and infrastructure projects increasingly expect spatial data that is consistent, well referenced, and ready to share. That means agreed geological map standards and legends, clean coordinate systems and projections, and spatial databases that other teams can trust. Field data capture with mobile GIS has largely replaced paper transcription, which changes how quickly a survey moves from outcrop to decision.

Remote methods have widened the reach of a single survey team. Multispectral and SAR remote sensing extend mapping into terrain no one can easily walk, while machine learning for lithology mapping is starting to speed up first-pass classification. These techniques overlap heavily with the material in remote sensing and GIS in geosciences, and this course keeps that connection in view.

What you will be able to do afterwards

After completing the course, participants should be able to:

  • Produce geological maps using standard legends and projections.
  • Build and query spatial databases in a GIS.
  • Plan and control field surveys using GNSS/RTK positioning.
  • Design UAV photogrammetry surveys and surface models.
  • Interpret LiDAR elevation models and SAR imagery.
  • Assemble 3D geological models from field and remote data.
  • Compare machine-learning lithology mapping with field checks.

Course outline

Unit 1: Geological mapping fundamentals and innovations

  • Map standards, legends, and symbology.
  • Coordinate systems and projection errors.
  • Field observation to stratigraphic mapping.
  • Digital capture within the mapping workflow.

Unit 2: GIS in geological surveying

  • Designing geographic information systems (GIS) databases.
  • Mobile GIS field data capture and sync.
  • Overlay and proximity analysis methods.
  • Managing metadata, versioning, and data quality.

Unit 3: Remote sensing and drone applications

  • Uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry.
  • LiDAR digital elevation models for terrain.
  • Multispectral and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery.
  • GNSS and real-time kinematic (RTK) ground control.

Unit 4: 3D modeling and digital tools

  • Building digital outcrop and 3D geological models.
  • Extracting bedding, faults, and fracture sets.
  • Integrating surface and subsurface data.
  • Machine learning for lithology mapping and checks.

Unit 5: Sustainable and future-ready surveying

  • Lower-impact fieldwork and remote methods.
  • Open data standards and spatial database reuse.
  • Documented survey combining drone, LiDAR, and field data.
  • Emerging sensors, automation, and future skills.

How the course is delivered

The course runs as expert-led discussion supported by worked examples and documented case studies drawn from real mapping campaigns. Participants follow guided walkthroughs of interpreted survey datasets and finished 3D models, then take part in group exercises that test how survey choices affect the final map. The focus is on understanding methods and their limits, not on operating any one software package.

Who should attend

The course is aimed at geologists and survey professionals who want to bring modern spatial methods into their mapping work.

  • Field and exploration geologists updating their mapping toolkit.
  • GIS and remote-sensing specialists working with geological data.
  • Survey engineers and geospatial technicians supporting exploration projects.
  • Project geologists who commission or review survey deliverables.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a live software or laboratory session in the course?

No live software operation is included. The course is built around discussion and documented case studies, so instead of driving a GIS or photogrammetry package in real time, participants review prepared datasets and finished models and focus on how the results were produced and judged.

Do I need drone or LiDAR experience before attending?

No prior drone or LiDAR experience is assumed. The relevant concepts, from structure-from-motion to elevation modeling, are introduced from the ground up, though a mapping or GIS background will help you get the most from the material.

How much traditional mapping does the course still cover?

A good deal. Map standards, legends, projections, and field logic run through every unit, because the modern tools only produce reliable results when they are anchored in solid geological mapping practice.
