Course overview

Policy is now one of the largest sources of business risk and opportunity. Industrial subsidies redirect billions of investment. Sanctions close markets in days. Carbon pricing changes the economics of a plant. Interest rate decisions determine which projects clear their hurdle. Companies that treat policy as background noise are repeatedly surprised by events that were, in fact, well signaled.

This course covers policy and strategy across seven units: policy fundamentals, fiscal policy, monetary policy, trade and regulation, policy uncertainty, integration into strategic frameworks, and future trends. It is educational and is not political advocacy, financial advice or legal advice.

Reading policy without becoming political

The analytical task is neutral: what has been decided, what is the transmission mechanism, who bears the cost, who receives the benefit, and how durable is the decision given the politics behind it. That last question matters most, because a subsidy that will not survive the next election is a poor basis for a ten-year investment.

This is a professional skill, not an ideological one. The course covers policy positions from across the spectrum as subject matter, and concentrates on the consequences for a business rather than on whether the policy is right.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Decode who decides a policy and at which level.
  • Judge the political durability of a policy measure.
  • Sort who bears the cost and who captures the benefit.
  • Predict the next move in fiscal and monetary policy.
  • Absorb tariffs, sanctions and sudden regulatory change.
  • Survey the rules that revenue and assets depend on.
  • Rate an investment case that depends on a policy staying in place.
  • Influence a draft rule while it can still be changed.
  • Locate the sectors most exposed to climate and technology rules.

  • Legitimate advocacy through consultations and associations.

How the course is delivered

The course works from real policy documents, central bank communications, trade measures and documented corporate responses to policy shocks. Participants trace a policy through to its business consequences and argue the strategic response. The course is educational and is not financial, legal or political advice; policies are analyzed for their effects, not advocated or opposed. Participants who want the macro data skills first should look at Economic Analysis for Business Leaders.

Who should attend

  • Executives and strategy leaders in policy-exposed sectors.
  • Government affairs, regulatory and public policy professionals.
  • Finance and investment professionals assessing policy-dependent projects.
  • Risk managers responsible for regulatory and political exposure.
