Course overview
Every purchase order is a bet on future demand, and the evidence for that bet already sits in a company's inventory records. This course teaches buyers and analysts to read that evidence. It starts from stock, consumption, and supplier data, and works toward the concrete question a procurement team faces every week: what to order, how much, from whom, and when. The through-line is simple to state and harder to do well, turning inventory data into better purchasing.
Participants learn to segment items with ABC-XYZ analysis, read demand signals through consumption and demand-sensing techniques, and recalculate reorder points and safety stock directly from measured data instead of static rules. On the supplier side, the course builds scorecards, applies the Kraljic matrix to segment the supply base, and uses spend analysis and total cost of ownership (TCO) to compare offers on more than unit price. It sits inside the wider discipline of Strategic Procurement Management & Cost Optimization, and keeps its own focus tight: data analysis feeding smarter buying and category decisions. Cost and supplier figures used in examples are illustrative for operational decision-making and are not financial or investment advice.
Where inventory data meets purchasing
Procurement teams often buy from habit, from a fixed reorder quantity or a supplier relationship that has not been tested against data in years. Meanwhile the inventory system records exactly which items move, which sit, how demand varies week to week, and how reliably each supplier delivers. Bringing that data into the buying decision is where the value is. Consumption patterns show which SKUs deserve a different order policy, lead-time variability analysis shows where a supplier is quietly forcing extra safety stock, and spend analysis shows where fragmented buying is leaving savings on the table.
This course connects the two worlds so procurement decisions rest on signals rather than assumptions. It moves from descriptive analytics, describing what has happened, toward predictive analytics that anticipate what demand and supply will do next, and shows how category management turns those insights into a coherent buying strategy for each group of items.
Course objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Justify purchasing decisions by quantity, timing, source, and cost.
- Segment stock into classes that each need a different buying rule.
- Recalculate a buying policy from measured consumption patterns.
- Interpret forecast error as a measure of how far to trust a plan.
- Derive negotiation evidence from measured supplier performance.
- Challenge a supplier quote with independent cost evidence.
- Weigh ownership cost against price before awarding a purchase.
- Consolidate fragmented buying under fewer managed agreements.
- Compare analytics platforms and data sources for procurement.
- Rank suppliers on responsible-sourcing as well as delivered cost.

How the course is delivered
The course runs through structured presentations, facilitated discussion, worked examples, and documented case studies drawn from real procurement and inventory operations. Participants review sample scorecards, ABC-XYZ segmentations, and spend-analysis outputs, and discuss how to apply the same reasoning to their own supplier base and item catalog. The course is educational; it does not provide certification and it does not audit any specific procurement system.
Who should attend
The course suits buyers, procurement and category managers, purchasing analysts, inventory and materials planners who work closely with procurement, and supply chain analysts who want to make buying decisions on evidence. It is aimed at people who order stock or choose suppliers and want to base those choices on inventory and supplier data.

Frequently asked questions
What analytics tools or coding skills do I need before attending?
None. The course teaches the analytical thinking behind ABC-XYZ segmentation, supplier scorecards, and spend analysis, and shows what tools such as Power BI and Tableau are used for without requiring you to code. Comfort with spreadsheets is helpful, but the emphasis is on interpreting data and making buying decisions, not on programming.
How does this course differ from the inventory planning and optimization course?
This course looks at inventory data through a procurement lens and stops at the buying decision, covering supplier analytics, spend analysis, and category management. The inventory planning and optimization course is the broader, model-heavy planning discipline that sets stock levels across a network using forecasting and optimization models. If your work is mainly purchasing and supplier selection, start here; if it is planning stock across the chain, that one fits better.
Is this course about procurement, inventory, or both?
Both, joined at the point where they meet. The subject matter is inventory and consumption data, and the purpose is smarter procurement. Participants learn to read what inventory records reveal about demand and supplier performance, then use that reading to decide what and how much to buy.
