Course overview

There is now an internationally agreed answer to the question "what does good compliance management look like?" It sits in a family of ISO management-system standards, anchored by ISO 37301, the 2021 requirements standard for compliance management systems that superseded the older ISO 19600 guidance. Managing Compliance with International Standards teaches participants to read, interpret, and apply that family: ISO 37301 for the compliance management system itself, ISO 37001 for anti-bribery management, and ISO 31000 for the risk vocabulary both of them borrow. Rather than treating compliance as a pile of individual obligations, the course teaches management-system thinking, where obligations flow into a register, the register drives risk-based priorities, and a plan-do-check-act cycle keeps the whole apparatus under review.

The emphasis throughout is on the standards as working tools. Participants learn what each clause actually demands, what auditors look for as evidence of conformity, how a nonconformity is raised and closed through corrective action, and what a credible management review looks like on the calendar of a real compliance function. Because ISO 37301 places culture and leadership commitment at the center of a functioning system, the human dimension gets sustained attention as well; participants who want a fuller treatment of conduct and ethics can follow this course with Ethical Business Conduct and Regulatory Compliance.

When counterparties start asking about your management system

Certification against management-system standards has become a currency of trust between organizations. Tenders ask for it, multinational customers screen suppliers for it, and boards cite it when regulators question their oversight. ISO 37301 made this possible for compliance specifically: as a requirements standard, it can be audited by independent certification bodies, which turned compliance management from an internal art into something externally attestable. Even organizations that never pursue certification are adopting the standard's architecture, because an obligations register, defined compliance risk criteria, and a documented review cycle give a compliance function structure that improvised approaches lack. Professionals who can speak this language fluently are increasingly the ones trusted to build and run the system.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Satisfy clause wording that changed from advice to obligation
  • Withstand a certification audit on existing records
  • Grade compliance obligations by exposure, not by habit
  • Substantiate each clause with a dated artifact and an owner
  • Assemble documented information proportionate to compliance risk
  • Sequence remediation from a gap assessment against ISO 37301
  • Answer a regulator in one jurisdiction without breaching another
  • Evidence compliance culture rather than assert it
  • Retain plan-do-check-act discipline between audit cycles

Course outline

Unit 1: Introduction to international compliance standards

  • The word shall in ISO 37301 where ISO 19600 only advised
  • ISO 37001 anti-bribery duties that overlap ISO 37301
  • ISO 31000 as the risk vocabulary shared by both standards
  • Certification bodies and how third-party audits are run

Unit 2: Risk-based approaches to compliance

  • Identifying compliance obligations from permit conditions
  • Setting consequence scales and likelihood judgments
  • Prioritizing obligations against acceptance thresholds
  • Refreshing assessments whenever change triggers fire

Unit 3: Implementing compliance management systems

  • Scope wording that survives a Stage 1 review
  • Governing-body accountability and functional independence
  • Proof of competence and awareness for each key role
  • Evidence from monitoring, measurement, and internal audit

Unit 4: Cross-border regulatory challenges

  • Feeding each jurisdiction's obligations into one register
  • One certificate or many across a group of subsidiaries
  • Handling conflicts across jurisdictions through escalation
  • Using one architecture as a common language across regions

Unit 5: Building a culture of compliance and continuous improvement

  • Compliance culture, the clause hardest to prove
  • Two grades of nonconformity, major for systemic failure
  • Running PDCA so each management review ends in a decision
  • Maturity trends that hold between certification cycles

How the course is delivered

Teaching is built around clause-by-clause reading of the standards paired with annotated examples of the documents a conforming system produces: obligations registers, risk criteria statements, audit plans, and management review records. The facilitator presents worked examples of gap assessments against ISO 37301, and structured group analysis sessions have participants evaluate sample evidence the way an external auditor would, debating whether it demonstrates conformity. Documented case studies of certification journeys, including setbacks, ground the discussion in what implementation genuinely requires.

Who should attend

The course is designed for professionals building, running, or assessing a compliance management system aligned with international standards.

  • Compliance managers and officers preparing an organization for ISO 37301 alignment or certification
  • Integrated management-system and quality managers extending their scope into compliance
  • Internal auditors who audit against management-system standards
  • Risk managers who supply the risk assessments a compliance management system depends on
  • Consultants and advisors supporting clients through standards implementation

About EuroQuest International Training

Frequently asked questions

Will attending certify me or my organization against ISO 37301 or ISO 37001?

No. Certification against ISO standards is performed only by independent certification bodies through their own audit processes, and EuroQuest has no role in that. ISO and other standards appear here purely as educational subject matter: the course builds your understanding and implementation skills, and no formal certification of individuals or organizations results from attending.

Do I need existing ISO or management-system experience to benefit?

No prior standards background is assumed. Unit 1 establishes the vocabulary and architecture from first principles, so newcomers can follow, while experienced management-system practitioners gain depth on the compliance-specific clauses and their audit implications.

Can the course tell us which obligations apply to our organization?

It teaches you the method for identifying and registering obligations, but it cannot substitute for legal counsel. Compliance duties differ substantially between jurisdictions and sectors, and nothing presented in the sessions should be treated as legal advice for your specific situation.
