Course overview

An innovation team usually fails not on the idea but on the seams. The engineers and the marketers describe the same product and mean different things. The team depends on a finance decision from someone who was never in the room. A specialist protects their function's interest against the team's goal, and nobody has the authority to overrule them because the team leader does not own their reporting line. Innovation is a cross-functional activity by nature, and cross-functional is where coordination goes to die.

This course is about leading that kind of team well. It covers leading innovation teams, making cross-functional collaboration actually work, fostering creativity, handling the communication and conflict that mixed teams generate, running agile and adaptive practices, sharing knowledge across boundaries, and sustaining collaboration once the novelty wears off. Why the seams are where it breaks

A single-function team shares a language, a manager and a set of incentives. A cross-functional innovation team shares none of these reliably. Its members answer to different bosses with different priorities, use vocabulary that looks shared but is not, and are measured on function-specific goals that can pull directly against the team's purpose. The team leader typically has responsibility without matching authority, which means the work runs on influence, clarity and trust rather than on instruction.

How the course is delivered

The course runs as facilitated discussion and case work. Participants analyze documented cross-functional projects, including the ones that failed at the seams, and work through the coordination and conflict problems on real situations they bring. Agile and facilitation techniques are demonstrated and discussed; there is no acted role-play and no software environment. The strongest sessions usually come from unpicking a real project that stalled and locating exactly where the coordination broke.

No, and the course assumes you often will not. Leading a team you do not formally manage is treated as the normal case, and influence, clarity and decision rights are the tools it develops.

Does the course include a live lab?

No. There is no software environment and no acted role-play. Participants work from documented cases and their own projects, analyzed in the room.

Is this an agile certification course?

No. Agile practices are covered in Unit 5 as one useful set of tools. The course is educational and does not provide a certification; formal agile certification is offered by recognized certification bodies.
