Course overview
Seismic data is the main way the oil and gas industry images rock kilometres below the surface, and it underpins where wells are drilled and how reservoirs are understood. Turning the raw signal into a reliable picture takes a chain of acquisition, processing, and interpretation, and a misstep at any stage can mislead a multi-million-dollar decision. This course works through that chain so participants can read seismic data with judgment.
The focus is on the seismic reflection method, the processing that turns recorded signals into an image, the velocity work that ties time to depth, and the structural and stratigraphic interpretation that follows. It treats interpretation as reasoning under uncertainty, where understanding how the image was made is essential to trusting what it shows.
Why seismic interpretation matters
Exploration and field development decisions rest heavily on seismic interpretation, yet the image is never a direct photograph of the rock. It is the product of assumptions made in acquisition and processing, and an interpreter who does not understand those assumptions can read structures that are artefacts or miss ones that are real.
Sound interpretation links what the data shows to the geology it represents, and stays honest about what the data cannot resolve. That combination of technical understanding and disciplined judgment is what separates a useful interpretation from a confident but wrong one. This course develops both.
What you will be able to do afterwards
By the end of the course, participants should be able to:
- Explain the seismic reflection method and how data is acquired.
- Describe the main processing steps and how they shape the final image.
- Understand velocity models and the conversion from time to depth.
- Interpret structure and stratigraphy from seismic sections.
- Apply seismic interpretation to exploration with appropriate caution.

- Direct hydrocarbon indicators and their limits.
- Integrating seismic with other subsurface data.
- Communicating interpretation and its uncertainty.
How the course is delivered
The course is led through structured explanation, worked examples, and documented case studies using seismic sections and interpretation examples. Participants examine processed data, velocity models, and interpreted sections and discuss the reasoning and uncertainty behind them. The course is educational and does not provide certification.
Who should attend
This course suits geoscientists and geophysicists early in their careers, geologists and engineers who work with seismic interpretations, and technical staff in exploration who want to understand the data they rely on. It is useful both to those new to seismic and to professionals from adjacent disciplines. A general earth-science or technical background is helpful but not essential.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be a geophysicist?
No. The course explains the seismic method and processing in accessible terms and concentrates on interpretation and judgment. It suits geologists, engineers, and technical staff who work with seismic data, as well as geophysicists building their interpretation skills.
Does the course require specialist interpretation software?
No. It teaches the principles of processing and interpretation using seismic examples and case studies. The understanding transfers to any interpretation platform, which the course does not endorse or depend on.
Is the course only for the oil and gas industry?
Its main application is hydrocarbon exploration, but the seismic principles also apply in minerals and some geotechnical work. The course focuses on oil and gas while teaching method that travels.
