Course overview

The oil and gas sector is being reshaped by pressures that barely existed a generation ago: national net-zero commitments, falling costs for renewables, digital operations, and investors who now read a company's emissions data as closely as its production figures. This course looks at how senior professionals can position their organizations for that shift, treating the energy transition as a strategic and commercial question, not only a technical one.

Across five units, participants examine the trends redrawing global energy demand, the digital tools changing how assets are run, the ESG frameworks that increasingly govern access to capital, and the business models emerging as companies diversify beyond hydrocarbons. The discussion connects to broader work in Energy Transition and Decarbonization in Oil & Gas, placing everyday management decisions inside a longer view of where the industry is heading.

Why this matters for energy organizations

Energy companies are being asked to do two things at once, keep supplying reliable and affordable energy while cutting the carbon intensity of how they produce it. The IEA and IRENA now publish scenarios in which oil demand plateaus within the working lives of today's managers, and mechanisms such as the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) are turning emissions into a direct cost of doing business. Leaders who read these signals early can plan capital allocation, partnerships, and workforce changes on their own terms instead of reacting late.

The pressure is not only regulatory. Lenders, insurers, and institutional investors increasingly screen portfolios against climate risk, and a weak sustainability position can raise the cost of financing well before any law forces a change. This course helps leaders interpret those pressures and turn them into decisions their boards and operations teams can act on.

What you will be able to do afterwards

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Interpret IEA and IRENA outlooks against Paris Agreement targets.
  • Assess EU ETS and CBAM carbon pricing effects on strategy.
  • Evaluate digital oilfield, IoT, AI, and automation value add.
  • Assess ESG position via GRI, SASB, TCFD, and ISSB frameworks.
  • Map emissions to GHG Protocol Scope 1, 2, and 3 categories.
  • Evaluate CCUS, hydrogen, and renewables business models.
  • Frame partnership and financing options in commercial terms.
  • Plan workforce and skills shifts toward low-carbon operations.

How the course is delivered

The course is led by an experienced facilitator and built around expert-led discussion, worked examples, and documented case studies drawn from real energy organizations. Sessions include guided walkthroughs of the frameworks and digital tools covered, together with group discussion that lets participants compare approaches across different companies and regions. There is no live lab, simulation, or field exercise. Because several units touch on financing, carbon markets, and investor expectations, the content is educational and does not constitute financial or investment advice. Coverage of ESG and reporting standards is likewise educational and does not provide certification or a compliance or legal opinion.

Who should attend

The course suits professionals who shape or support strategy in the energy sector, including:

  • Managers and directors in oil, gas, and energy companies responsible for strategy or operations.
  • Sustainability, ESG, and HSE professionals shaping corporate climate and reporting positions.
  • Commercial, planning, and business development staff assessing diversification and new ventures.
  • Policy, regulatory, and government affairs specialists working on energy transition matters.
  • Emerging leaders preparing for senior roles in a changing energy sector.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a technical or engineering background?

No. The course is written for leaders, strategists, and specialists from commercial, sustainability, policy, and management roles. It treats digital operations, emissions, and business models as strategic subjects, so a background in finance, planning, or sustainability is as useful here as an engineering one.

Does the course cover specific ESG and reporting frameworks?

Yes. It works through the main frameworks shaping energy reporting, including GRI, SASB, TCFD, the ISSB standards, and the GHG Protocol's Scope 1, 2, and 3 categories, and shows how companies apply them in practice. The treatment is educational and does not certify you against any standard.

Will this course certify me or give a compliance opinion?

No. It builds understanding and judgment rather than a formal qualification. Nothing in the sessions amounts to certification, financial or investment advice, or a compliance or legal opinion on your organization's position.
